Items in crib are for photography styling only. If you are like me you can't stop gazing at this nursery image and not feel pure joy. It also makes me smile because I recall the first conversation I had with Christine Yeargin, author of Cake for Breakfast blog, about her vision for the nursery and the bold, bright oversized floral print she was in love with. After seeing our first designs and considering the bolder wallpaper prints Christine decided they just weren't for her and we moved away from colorful wallpaper to a minimal look using a clean wall paint as the backdrop to delicate, fresh and soothing styling. We're calling it Boho Chic.

Hello YouthfulNest readers! My name is Shelbi and I’m a lifestyle blogger over at EverydayMrs as well as a first-time expecting mom. Being a first-time mom is overwhelming for so many reasons. However, nursery design doesn’t need to be one of these reasons. Today I want to share with you four nursery tips I have for fellow nursery newbies (or even second time moms who may need a little extra motivation!). This is a classic case of the second child. Typically, a second baby gets along just fine with a bit less of their very own and enjoys hand-me-downs of gently worn clothing; lived in strollers; and well-tested toys. And there is absolutely nothing wrong with this scenario. BUT, keeping your first child's newborn photo hung over the second baby's changing table is taking this whole hand-me-down thing a bit too far. That was the case in a client and friend of mine's baby number two's nursery. (It was clearly time for a nursery re-design for this baby number two.) About a year after I designed a big girl bedroom for a friend's daughter, their second daughter Hadley was born. As busy parents now of two little girls, the nursery remained the same as it had been when big sister moved out over a year prior – with big sis's newborn image still hanging over the changing table. One day just after Hadley celebrated her first birthday Kim (mom) and I got to talking and decided it was time to do something about the impersonal space that was the nursery. We discussed plans to freshen it up, bring in some personalized décor and add in significantly more functionality that was missing. I wasted no time and within a week we had a sweet, budget conscious nursery design. Scroll down to learn the six key steps of designing any nursery that were applied to this makeover.

I share a lot with our readers and followers on social media about all things best design practices and products for baby and kids' rooms. That sometimes includes tooting our own horn about our time-saving virtual interior design services and how we love helping real, busy moms. But talking about our services through words and still pictures lately seemed inadequate. Then I started working with one mother who was clearly meant to be on camera – her honest and expressive nature when talking about her appreciation for my expertise and using our virtual service gave me an idea beyond a room reveal. I proposed to my client Jeannine, a modern show idea that told the story from both sides of designing a nursery as a real, busy mom and as a virtual designer. She graciously agreed. The Virtually Perfect Room was born. This post is sponsored by some of our favorite brands and retailers, but the content and opinions expressed are our own. Depending where you live, your summer fun is over and your kids have or will be heading back-to-school soon. As a mom myself, I am excited for my son to start kindergarten and simply hoping he can avoid using the word “poopy” in front of the teachers. Yes, he is only five and his maturity level isn’t quite there. I got to know another mom who is doing a double-take of her young son who will attend preschool this fall. Jeannine Benoit Adams, is the mother to Ethan a beautiful and spirited four year old. He is also now a big brother to a baby brother who joined the family just this past July. Those are both big responsibilities and some new life skills are on the horizon for him this year. To get Ethan ready for the school year and his new role as big brother mom and dad called upon YouthfulNest to hook him up with a big boy bedroom of his very own. It's time! Time for their first born to transition into a big kid bed and pass down his crib to his baby brother-to-be. With the Adams' family now living in their new Chicago home there is plenty of space for two new kids' rooms with one dedicated to a baby nursery. Which is exciting and a bit daunting to mom Jeannine. That's where YouthfulNest steps in to help Jeannine achieve the nursery design of her California dreams. Jeannine is one stylish mamma. Which makes sense since she is also the owner of Ready Pretty, an online service that helps women everywhere dress better. Once she drops off her son at child care the rest of her day is filled developing marketing campaigns; coordinating the launch of new services; appearing on local T.V. shows; and writing fashion focused articles for a couple popular blogs. Just another day in the life of this modern mom. This post is sponsored by YouthfulNest and other retailers, but the content and opinions expressed are our own. Maybe you've seen on social media that I have been working with a client in Chicago. Her name is Jeannine Benoit Adams and she is a real, busy working woman. She is also the mom to the most adorable four year old little boy and pregnant with their second little boy! Being that she owns an online wardrobe styling company, Ready Pretty, she is all about working virtually. Which is where YouthfulNest's virtual services comes in. Our services allowed her to sneak in time to make design decisions for two youthful spaces, a big kid bedroom and a nursery. All doable when it worked for her and her schedule. As with all virtual design projects, Jeannine first completed our online Project Overview questionnaires and submitted them via her cell phone. After I studied them we booked a call to discuss the projects based on her specific input. We discussed budgets, visions, timing, functionality, room likes and dislikes, etc. As well as went over what she can expect from the whole online process. Not all mama birds need our help designing a youthful nest. In fact, it was rather clear from our first conversations that Ashley had amazing design vision and style. It was about one year ago that we met and I learned that she was managing all the design decisions for a home they were building. She passionately spoke about finishes and layouts. While it was obvious Ashley wouldn't become a YouthfulNest client, I knew I needed to find a way to collaborate with her. We decided that her writing for our blog would be one of those ways – a win for us and our readers. Today she shares a peek into a very special room in her new home, her daughter Ever's new big girl bedroom. I decided it was time to high-jack a blog post to share my personal mom-to-be nursery design story being it is the reason my company YouthfulNest was born. This isn't a snoozy startup story. It's me sharing insights as an anxious, first time mom who nested so hard, trying to make everything perfect, that I ruined my brand new white nursery carpet – months before bringing home my baby. I definitely had an out-of-body experience being a first time mom-to-be. I wanted everything in the nursery to be "perfect" before bringing home my baby. This made me realize just how unique and challenging a baby nursery was to create, even for a seasoned designer. It was my own struggles with overwhelming decisions, budget, room size and functionality which led me to developing a better interior design experience. One that would help other parents do it with more ease and confidence.

It's time! Maybe your little one is simply growing out of their crib and needs more space. Maybe they have developed a personality that no longer jives with their baby room styling. Or maybe mom and dad are ready to help them grow. Whatever the indications or reasoning, at some point your baby is going to be ready for a "big kid" bedroom probably around the age of 3. Below I share five simple makeover tips for a smooth transition from the nursery into that more mature space that should be fun for you and them. I knew it was time to makeover my son's nursery that started it all for YouthfulNest, 'City Night Lite', after removing the changing pad and baby toiletries from the changing area. My son has also developed quite the interest in cars, it's beyond toy cars. He loves flipping through car mags with dad and can name almost any model that drives by us on the road or he's sees parked on the street. I really wanted to bring in "some" of his love of four wheel vehicles into his personal space. Especially since we don't do toys in the bedroom. We took our time and didn't race through the process. We had a couple speed bumps along the way, like when I told him with excitement he was getting a brand new full size organic mattress from Naturepedic. He wasn't as thrilled as mom was – instead he sulked and almost came to tears in a couple conversations about the change. I asked him why he was so upset and he said, "I just don't want to get rid of my very first mattress." I seized the opportunity to point out that his very first mattress was actually the crib mattress which we had already given away. " Then he said, "Oh, O.K." And we put that discussion to bed. In the end he loves the new bed frame and mattress because it is several inches lower then the original guest bed that was in his nursery so he can easily get up and slide off the bed. He thinks his new bed and all the other newness is perfect for him! |
