The dresser in my son's nursery is over 50 years old, so yeah sorta heirloom since it has been in my family and used by children for three generations. Tips on landing a piece in this category would be to stay away from trends, like industrial metal accents that might get old by the time they become a tween. Look for a piece with clean lines; one made of wood so that it could be repainted/refinished over the years; and consider a piece where you could change the feet or swap out the hardware. There are so many cool knobs and pulls out there from woodland creatures to chic Lucite and gold rods.

For first time parents you might here from others that you could do with spending much on a glider or get away with out one at all. I did. But I am so so glad I found a way to make room for this piece in my son's nursery. While like a crib, this piece may only see a few years of really hardcore use. But the kind and amount of use it will get is why a quality piece is essential. Comfort of mom or caretaker is the first and foremost important thing. Make sure you get one that has the right features for you. Which I think are pretty standard – 1) Arm rests (help to position yourself for feedings and reading books); a high enough back for relieving strain on your head, neck and shoulders allowing you to resting your eyes in comfort for a few moments or few hours; and a rocking and/or swivel feature that allows for comforting the little one and some additional mobility. So now that you are considering spending more on your rocker/glider the other consideration is finding a piece that in a few years can be re-purposed in another room in your home. The great news is that there are great options for everyone's style that could transfer from the baby's room to the living room without it looking like a nursery glider. As baby grows and toddler grows, you will use this piece less and less. Eventually you will want to use the space it occupies for something else like a child play area, arts and crafts or their own little people reading nook complete with bean bag style chair.
