4 Nursery Tips From a First-Time Mom

Hello YouthfulNest readers! My name is Shelbi and I’m a lifestyle blogger over at EverydayMrs as well as a first-time expecting mom. Being a first-time mom is overwhelming for so many reasons. However, nursery design doesn’t need to be one of these reasons. Today I want to share with you four nursery tips I have for fellow nursery newbies (or even second time moms who may need a little extra motivation!).

Stick to neutrals for the bigger investment pieces

This one was a no brainer for us, as we aren’t finding out gender. However, it’s something I think all first-time parents should strongly consider unless you know you’re only planning on one kiddo.

Nursery furniture isn’t the cheapest, so it will definitely benefit you in the long run to invest in pieces that will work for both genders. That doesn't mean only white and gray, for example we went with this amazing wallpaper and evergreen colored crib because it can work for a boy or a girl. Then make simple changes like swapping out the textiles or lesser expensive pieces in the space to aim it more towards that specific gender.

Find items that can grow with babe

The crib we chose is able to convert into a toddler bed down the road, which makes the price tag all the more worth it. We also didn’t choose “baby themed” furniture. For example, our dresser could easily go in a big kid or adult room for that matter. And I would absolutely put the glider in our living room once it’s no longer needed in the nursery/kid’s room. I loved choosing pieces that fit our home and personal style to incorporate into the nursery versus it just being “only for a nursery”.

You don’t have to spend a lot

Like the name of my blog infers I’m a firm believer that you can have the style of home, fashion, life you want on an everyday budget! This rings true for a nursery space as well. If you’re on a tight budget don’t be afraid to ask family and friends to see if they might be getting rid of nursery furniture that you would like to use. The good thing about nursery furniture is that it’s usually in pretty good shape, as it isn’t used for that long of a period.

Another tip is to shop online retailers. I loved searching Joss & Main and Wayfair for amazing deals on nursery items that seamlessly fit my style and theme I was aiming for in the nursery. And you'll be surprised how many online retailers offer free shipping even on large pieces.

Don’t be afraid to ask for help!

Planning and designing a nursery while hormones are running high can be overwhelming. If you need help painting recruit the help of your partner, or maybe your amazing mother-in-law like mine who stepped in to help me hang wallpaper!
