It's time! Time for their first born to transition into a big kid bed and pass down his crib to his baby brother-to-be. With the Adams' family now living in their new Chicago home there is plenty of space for two new kids' rooms with one dedicated to a baby nursery. Which is exciting and a bit daunting to mom Jeannine. That's where YouthfulNest steps in to help Jeannine achieve the nursery design of her California dreams. Jeannine is one stylish mamma. Which makes sense since she is also the owner of Ready Pretty, an online service that helps women everywhere dress better. Once she drops off her son at child care the rest of her day is filled developing marketing campaigns; coordinating the launch of new services; appearing on local T.V. shows; and writing fashion focused articles for a couple popular blogs. Just another day in the life of this modern mom.  This mamma is ready for baby boy number two. Jeannine Adams ready and waiting.  Forecast calls for sunshine with a hint of mint. LESS IS MORE. I had the pleasure of meeting Jeannine a year prior at a business event in New York. So when I learned she was pregnant I reached out to congratulate her and find out what fun plans she had in mind for her nursery. Of course I offered up our services and after some back and forth Jeannine decided she really needed help on both youthful spaces, the new nursery and her son’s new big boy bedroom. (We’ll be sharing all things big boy bedroom in an upcoming blog!) The second time around this mom knew she didn’t need so much “stuff”. An approach that lines up perfectly with her minimalist, less is more style she already has going on in the rest of her home. Jeannine wanted that same California calm, no fuss styling to flow into the baby room as well. “My time is so valuable these days I'd rather, if I'm not working, to spend time with my family, versus scrolling endlessly through Pinterest and online shopping, trying to find the exact right look for the room I want." –Jeannine At the moment the soon to be nursery was a guest bedroom with sparse furnishings or decor and seemed to Jeannine a tight squeeze for an entire functioning nursery. I saw it the perfect blank canvas!
Going Back To Cali. As we shared in our previous blog post Makings of Chicago Nursery and Kid’s Design’s we started off going through the inspiration she had collected on a dedicated Pinterest board and determined which items she already had and could reuse and which other must-haves and decor she needed to purchase. In her original design inspiration Jeannine showed a big interest in a room with a focal wall that was covered with a green cactus print and lots of white. I believed my biggest design challenge for me was to create something that was streamlined, but not sterile. Uncluttered, but not cold. “I have a California vibe in my home and I really wanted to bring that through to the nursery." –Jeannine I presented my initial style board with well balanced pieces that took their style cues from the cactus print wallpaper. As it turned out Jeannine liked the balance of muted greens, pops of sea glass blue and touches of browns. But she changed her mind on the cactus wallpaper and realized she wanted something more soothing, maybe a graphic print in a pale mint color. This meant going back to the style board and curating a new overall room style that was more defined by the "California Cool" vibe she craves.  Initial room design, style board. To arrive at Jeannine's dream nursery, I found inspiration from the beach like the sun, sand and water. I started with the main focal point in the room, the wallpaper accent wall. After sharing a few new options with Jeannine we landed on a very fresh design from Anewall called Crescent Dot. The only problem is it didn't come in mint green, and while the pale blue was water inspired, it wasn't the main color Jeanine REALLY wanted. But that was no problem for Anewall, they simply asked us to share a digital example of the color we had in mind and voila, Jeannine got her custom color in a "hint of mint". Before installing the perfect wallpaper Jeannine had the entire room repainted with one of our favorite people and earth friendly products. She used our paint brand suggestion of Colorhouse paint in the Bisque .01 – the freshest white that somehow still manages to make a room feel cozy. From there Jeannine started to move in the new furnishings and décor pieces I had swapped out like the serene beachy styled wall art from Minted; a darling shark creature from the Slumberkins collection; and she decided to reuse her existing crib, oh-so comfy glider, and repurposed their old bedroom dresser as the changing table. To keep things light and airy but to provide a little contrast to all the white walls and furniture, I brought in various natural finishes and fibers through decor pieces. One of my favorite decisions was to replace the popular white, store bought picture ledges with a one-of-a-kind, faux-hanging, natural wood bookshelf. I meticulously designed it with an Etsy shop to make sure it was super safe, functional and had little macrame detail, but nothing obviously in your face. Sounds delightful right? I could tell Jeannine wasn't convinced she would love it, which is a tough spot for a client to be in, especially when she couldn't return it. But what I so appreciated about working with Jeannine is while she questioned some recommendations, she also trusted my reasoning (and a little pleading) for a particular item and that combined with my experience as a designer to get it right. Ultimately, I got the green light on the bookshelf. Good news, she loves it!  Customization creates a better bookshelf. Etsy shop SpoolandGrooveCrew Taking into consideration my client's time crunched schedule, I also looked to complete the space with as many time saving, and safe, items as possible. That included: the Skip Hop wipe-clean changing pad (bye-bye extra laundry); a machine washable faux-fur rug from Kroma Carpets (hello clean place for tummy-time), a set of QuickZip organic cotton, zip on sheets (fast and back-saving for mom) and an organic crib mattress from Naturepedic (no time wasted worrying 'bout safe sleep). The room was completed with a peppering of some woven storage pieces and additional natural wood finishes like an baby play gym and blanket ladder, both from another stellar Etsy shop, TheGoldenAppleStudio. BEFORE & AFTER To our client's surprise the room came together with a final look that looked effortless and cozy, but not cramped. After the entire room was completed and the last piece of artwork hung Jeannine told me she walked into the room and felt ready for baby number two. “I walked into the finished nursery and it made my heart happy." –Jeannine  The finished nursery is the epitome of serenity and ease.
