We are concerned about the food that goes in their bodies; the clothes they wear on their back; the shampoos that wash their hair. So don't forget the place where their entire bodies rest for 8-14 hours – their mattress. We are super fans of investing in a quality mattress for both the crib and their big kid bed. Not only do you need to select the proper firmness for each stage there is also the decision to make about the functionality in terms of bed wetting. And finally lets talk about the health and safety benefits of that mattress. To do this topic justice we catch up with our friends at Naturepedic, producers of luxury organic mattress for the entire family. Learn what safe, healthy sleeping really means. Q&A with JAIME BRannan-RileY, Director of MarketingIt's only Natural to Her Q. Where was Barry Cik and what was he doing when he decided to create Naturepedic? A. Before founding Naturepedic, Barry Cik was an environmental engineer with over 30 years of experience. Barry officially created Naturepedic when his first grandchild was on the way. Shopping for a crib mattress was a rude awakening for Barry. He noticed a lot of mattresses used certain chemicals in the manufacturing and production process that were not things he wanted his grandchild to sleep on. Nothing seemed acceptable for his family, especially his grandchildren, to sleep on, so he set out to positively change the industry. Q. What was the inspiration for creating Naturepedic organic mattress and accessories? A. The inspiration for creating Naturepedic was Barry’s family. Years ago he saw that many crib mattress and bedding manufacturers used harmful chemicals and materials in both the assembly process and the final products. When he couldn’t find a suitable organic crib mattress for his first grandchild, he decided to simply make his own. “I knew all about vinyl/PVC, polyurethane foam, and the various chemicals contained in them and there was no way I was going to put my grandchild to sleep within a few inches of these chemicals.” - Barry A. Cik, Co-Founder of Naturepedic. From there, he and his sons realized that the whole family could benefit from organic beds and bedding accessories. Read more. Q. Can you tell us a little about your products and how they are made, what makes them “organic”? A. Naturepedic products are made by Amish craftsmen in our GOTS certified factory in Chagrin Falls, Ohio. We use materials such as organic cotton fabric and fill, organic wool, and plant-based PLA, among other organic materials, in our mattresses and accessories. We also do not use flame retardants or other chemical flame barriers. The crib mattresses do not use latex, making for a more allergen-friendly design. All Naturepedic mattresses meet the organic and non-toxic standards of the Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) and/or the Global Organic Latex Standard (GOLS). We are certified by Greenguard and Made Safe as well. You can see our full list of certifications here. Q. What kind of impact can sleeping on a Naturepedic organic mattress have on a baby or child? A. Many health professionals have been worrying about the effects of chemicals on our children for many years now. On top of that, babies and toddlers sleep an average of 10-14 hours a day. The mattress is one of the single most important things in their lives, so sleeping on a mattress made with natural and organic materials will not only help them sleep easier, but can also give parents the peace of mind that their little one is on a superior mattress. You can learn more about Why Naturepedic is better for Babies & Kids here. Q. Besides being organic and toxin free what are other reasons parents will love the Naturepedic products? A. As a mother myself, I can say that Naturepedic organic mattresses have a number of elements that have improved my children’s sleep and made my life easier as a parent. Babies and children need mattresses with a firm support system, which Naturepedic provides. Personally, I love our adult organic waterproof pad. Not only does it protect against my own spills, I feel at ease when my kids crawl into bed with me. You can see why People Love Naturepedic here. Q. What other touch points of a child’s life do feel are important regarding non-toxic or organic products that compliment Naturepedic’s effort? A. Personally, I try to use organic products as much as I can with my children. I think things that are touching their skin, soaps and lotions, are important to go organic with because that requires direct contact with your child. Sheets, mattress pads and pillows are obvious accessories to go with mattresses that you should consider organic options for, especially because they also directly touch your children. For the parents who don’t want to spend a ton of time or money on the organic lifestyle, we share a lot of recipes for easy-to-make, delicious organic snacks and meals they can make - check them out on our Naturepedic Blog. Q. Do you have a social media style crush and/or favorite blog? A. As many women today, I love following Joanna Gaines. She’s down-to-earth, she’s a working mother like myself and she’s relatable. She clearly has a great sense of style and uses her social media to connect with her fans and give easy-to-follow design tips. Joanna Gaines also promotes using refurbished pieces in the home, which I appreciate because of the organic nature of it. Q. Who is your go to home furnishing or décor brand when looking for pieces for the kid’s spaces? A. I am a huge fan Land of Nod (Now Crate & Kids) because not only are they organic, but they do organic in fun prints. I recently bought one of my sons their new Sesame Street bedding for his big kid bed. Q. What's next for Naturepedic? A. Naturepedic is growing rapidly! We are launching a number of new products and are partnering with a number of new health and environmental experts just this year alone.
