While it may feel overwhelming to commit to learning about what each and every product is made out of, shopping with brands that are committed to safe, nontoxic materials is our favorite #momhack for keeping our little ones and the planet safe. We are always looking for ways to incorporate nature into children’s rooms and spaces. Whether it’s with bringing actual nature into the room via plants that are beneficial to the air quality or using products that we know are free of chemicals. While our adult bodies can (sometimes) withstand environmental allergens and chemicals, little bodies are much more susceptible and reactive. Our goal is to help our clients create rooms that are not only beautiful to look at -- but safe and healthy for our sweet little ones. As a general rule, we suggest avoiding products containing heavy metals, lead, mercury and cadmium, formaldehyde, phthalates, BPA and BPS, PVC, VOCs, PFAS, flame retardants, boric acid and fragrances. Why do we recommend avoiding these? Because they can affect behavior, disrupt endocrine systems, imbalance hormones, and in some cases are carcinogenic. Below are some of our favorite go-to retailers and brands committed to creating things that are good for humans and the earth. 1. The Tot
We all know it can be an overwhelming and time-consuming endeavor researching products to ensure their safety and earth-friendliness before purchasing. The layers of research that go into product selection for our kids in the Internet age can get a little crazy!
That’s why we love having go-to retailers, like The Tot, who are dedicated to doing that research on the front end so we know any products on their site have been vetted for us. Some items we are adoring on their site right now are the Ruggish play rugs (free of toxins, PVC, phthalates and flame retardants) and this Greenguard-certified Nursery Works rocker . 2. Naturepedic
One of the most commonly asked questions we get is, “What kind of crib mattress should I get?” There are so many on the market but we consistently recommend Naturepedic for both crib mattresses and big kid mattresses. (As well as their mattress covers and pillows!) When you think about how close your baby and child’s airways are to the mattress, it makes sense why going green is important for this piece.
As their site states, “By eliminating materials like flame retardants and polyurethane foam from our line of certified organic natural mattresses, Naturepedic supports an organic holistic lifestyle while protecting the environment.” Good for the humans and the environment -- now that’s what we’re talking about. 3. Cozy Earth
Speaking of sleep, we are absolutely in love with Cozy Earth's premium sheets and bedding. The 100% bamboo fabric is incredibly soft, naturally breathable, and temperature regulating. Oprah says it’s the “softest bedding ever” and we have to agree!
Made from responsibly sourced bamboo with ethical manufacturing practices, you can rest easy that they are good for you and the earth. This sweet baby blanket is a lovely gift for a parent-to-be that feels like an heirloom in the making. And you can’t go wrong with their classic crib sheet. 4. STOKKE
A sustainable list for little ones wouldn’t be complete without the classic, fan-favorite brand, Stokke. The Scandinavian company prides itself on creating products that last the test of time (think: highchairs you can actually pass down to your grandkids). Their commitment to craftsmanship and quality is evident in every innovative product they create. Their mini crib is one of our favorite small space solutions.
5. OEUF NYC
This Brooklyn-based brand was bred out of necessity: the founders of Oeuf wanted sustainable, hard wearing baby gear and furniture that could be passed down from sibling to sibling. With a strong dedication to ethical production and a company motto of “be good” -- you can rest assured you are doing right by both your family and our planet by shopping this brand.
Blending modernism with function, we love this bookshelf for displaying cherished items and books. We also think this hand-loomed rainbow rug would make a beautiful wall hanging in addition to serving its original purpose. 6. Bitte Shop
This online retailer carefully curates to ensure everything they sell is organic, sustainable and thoughtfully sourced and made. From bibs to blankets – Bitte Shop has an incredible assortment of beautiful goods for decorating and gifting.
We think this animal alphabet wall hanging made of 100% GOTS-certified organic cotton canvas would be a lovely nod to the beautiful earth and the creatures with whom we share it. We can never resist a pretty pastel rainbow nesting toy that doubles as decor. 7. NET ZERO
Did you know the average American goes through 1,000 plastic bags and 24 rolls of plastic wrap per year?! That’s a lot of plastic that can’t be recycled. Not to mention the cumulative exposure to plastics in our food adds up. Which is why we not only appreciate the earth friendly products from Net Zero's but their zero waste shipping that consisting of packaging made of compostable and recyclable materials.
We love this one stop shop for all types of reusable dining, personal care, and cleaning supplies! How cute are these reusable beeswax wraps? And you can never have too many reusable baggies for snacks on the go with little ones. Comments are closed.
