Q. Where were you and what were you doing when you decided to start Baby Jives?

A. The idea for my company began when I was pregnant with my first baby who we referred to as our “baby Jives” since I’m Jahje and my husband is Joe Ives – aka the Jives’. I went through some serious nesting and when planning the nursery I looked everywhere for that perfect finishing touch to enchant my babe: a mobile. I couldn’t find one that was my taste so I went up to my studio, took out my sewing machine and made my first. Folks kept asking where the mobile was from and I thought hmmm maybe this is something. So a year and a half later when my son finally started sleeping, I stole his nickname and started Baby Jives Co.

Q. You started with the nursery mobile and then what was the path to other items like your swaddles, wearable pieces and art?

A. To be honest I just keep creating things that I wish I had. For our swaddles and milestone sets they are really the items that I wish I had used for my kids to document their first year. They only have a handful of monthly pictures and now looking back I wish I’d had something prompting me to take a picture and share each month. For new product development I also look at what’s out there and then try to make something that doesn’t exist that also has my unique artistic spin on it.

Q. We love the highly artisan crafting of your mobile pieces, can you tell us about the creating process. How it is done and how long does it take you to create one mobile?

A. All my mobiles are designed by me in my studio outside of Philadelphia. Once I have a mobile design done some are then made with the help of local women who work with me in my studio and in their own homes but others are made in Lancaster County by a family run sewing studio I’ve partnered with for years now. They are all handmade with love in the US by women which is really important to me but now I have help to create the thousands of mobiles we make (because sleep is really important right?)

Q. We fell in love with your mobiles, but you have other artisan pieces in your online shop. What are your top sellers?

A. Our illustrated swaddles and milestone number sets are definitely our other top seller. Parents love how they can easily and artistically turn their child into a work of art and share their growth monthly. Another big seller is our naturally dyed swaddles – especially the geode version. These swaddles are dyed in our studio using only natural plants and minerals and the softest organic cotton gauze we could find.

Q. What's your own personal kid’s décor style?

A. Eclectic with lots of mobiles mixed in. My daughter Elodie’s room is actually where many of our photo shoots take place and her room style is constantly evolving with each shoot. She has an amazing vintage bed with a canopy by Blue House Joys that makes it feel like an enchanted room. It’s honestly my favorite room in the house – when it’s clean.

Q. Who are your favorite go-to home furnishing or décor brands?

A. I love the canopies from Blue House Joys, faux fur rugs from Kroma Carpets and washable rugs from Lorena Canals. Furniture in our house ranges from Babyletto to Ikea to Vintage Farmhouse items (we live outside Lancaster Pa where we’ve found some real gems) We live in an old 1850s stone farm house and it’s a work in process right now. I like to just let things evolve with a mix of old and new.

Q. What's next for Baby Jives?

A. We are just about to launch a welcome home and preemie clothing set with Goumi Kids that I’m very excited for. And I’ve got some exciting things in the works for Baby Jives Co this year building on our idea of helping families capture memories as they grow in a beautiful and artful way. And personally I’ve adding more yoga to my life to keep this mother centered and strong because self care is one of the most important things you can plan in your life.
