There are so many amazing products out there for improving the look of your DIY projects. But how many literally transform your furniture in ten minutes and is so simple that it can be done by a fifth grader? The Prettypegs collection of stylish, replaceable legs is that amazing product. You may recall I introduced you to Prettypegs on the blog about a year ago. They work seamless with IKEA furniture and take even the most, minimalist Scandinavian piece to a whole other level. There are short ones and tall ones and gilded ones and natural ones. Their extensive collection has you covered no matter what type of furniture project you are working on. Plus they are not just for IKEA furniture, they are an excellent solution for upcycling the dated piece in grandmas closet or found at your neighbors garage sale. Recently, I had an opportunity to do just that. I got myself a pair of their handsome Harald hairpin and Sigrid raw legs, turning a sad thrift shop find into a child’s room gem. More on that project coming soon! For now let me introduce you to the Swedish company Prettypegs and company founders who took a simple personal need and turned it into a solution for homeowner all over the globe. Q&A With Founders Jana and MikaelIf the Peg fits... Q: Where were you and what were you doing when you decided to go into business and start PrettyPegs? A: We were actually looking for a sofa at IKEA and thought they had a great design, but the legs just didn’t do it for us. On the way home we started google-ing if there was a place you could buy replaceable furniture legs and there wasn’t. So, at dinner that night, it kind of struck us - a real light bulb moment :) We started with some sketches of legs that we would have loved ourselves. And six months later we launched Prettypegs which turned global at first. Today, we sell our legs and parts to about 40 countries each months with Sweden, US, UK, France and Germany as our biggest markets. Q: Besides IKEA, What brands area a good fit for PrettyPeg legs and parts? A: We love all of the brands we have done collabs with: www.alcro.se - For our collaboration with Alcro, a paint company, for a limited time our customers were able to pick one of their paint colors for our table tops. www.sadolin.se - We launched our RAW collection together with Sadolin which is also a paint company and let a few cool designers make their own take on our untreated pegs with Sadolin’s colours. www.mini-empire.se: Together with illustrator Jenny von Döbeln we launched a campaign of hand painted clowns on our legs with all profit going to the “Clowns without Borders” foundation. www.myrornas.se : Together with Myrorna, which is a Swedish second hand chain, we restored some furniture with help from a few hand picked swedish designers and held an auction where the profit went to Myrorna and “The Salvation Army” (that owns Myrorna’s shops) to aid in their social work. www.mrsmighetto.se: We're about to launch an amazing collab with Swedish illustrator Mrs Mighetto that has designed amazing fairytale prints for our soon to be launched bed panels. Q: What is your advice to DIY’ers who want to use your products? A: Take a look in your grandparents attic to see if there is any furniture that could come alive with some design TLC. I (Jana) think those are the best up-cycling/DIY projects when there are personal memories around that specific piece of furniture and you know the history. I have quite a few pieces that used to be my grandmother's - and it makes me so happy each time I look at them. It also makes my grandma really happy when she comes home to visit and she sees her old stuff has a new life. My other tip is to check out our RAW collection – it makes it possible to paint the furniture itself and the legs together in the exact same colour. Some of our most crafty hands even added a little painting on them for kid’s rooms and they look amazing. Q: We love that you can take any inexpensive piece of furniture like from IKEA and up it’s style-IQ. Any suggestions for picking out the right Prettypeg legs for a specific project? A: Hard question since you can upgrade beds, sofas, chairs, tables, stools etc with Prettypegs. But at the moment I think both our favorite upgrade item would be the IKEA IVAR cabinet, since there are so many ways to go stylish and make it unique with our pegs and a few clever hacks. We are also suckers for something totally unexpected, like this cutting board turned into a coffee table with some cute pegs and a set of crafty hands. This was made by Marwa from @enthrallinggumption and it is definitely something unexpected. Q: YouthfulNest encourages homeowners to reuse or “upcycle” used furnishings to bring in high style at low prices to stay on budget for their kids’ rooms. Is this something that Prettypegs sees as a good fit for their product? A: That's what Prettypegs is all about :) To upcycle/upgrade/pimp already existing furniture and to make it personal and unique. And we believe kid’s rooms are the perfect place since we are not afraid to experiment when it comes to this room compared to for example the living room. We can really let our imagination run wild here and create a fantasy land for the little ones. Q: Can you show off some of your favorite and most dramatic makeovers project that would be a great fit for the nursery or kids’ space? A: Some of our dearest collabs are the perfect little Scandinavian bedroom inspired projects. So are a few that spice up any little kid’s room and are also useful for storage. And all using a few simple items from IKEA. Q: What are your personal home styles like? A: We have 23 sets of pegs in our home at the moment :) - On everything from a hallway bench, to our sofa, table, beds, and of course Ikea Ivar cabinets. And just like in many cases, it’s a bit more classic in the living room and more experimental and colorful in the kids rooms. But definitely with a Scandinavian touch. Q: Who are your favorite kid’s ready-to-buy home interior brands? Q: Who’s your social media style crush/s and/or favorite blog/s? A: Such a hard question since there are so many. But for example, the type of feeds that we tend to get most inspiration from are the typical Scandinavian feeds with a lot of up-cycling. One of my (Jana) favorites is Ida from @nordicremake. But at the same time we do love the more outrageous ones that are the opposite from us such as @kellywearstler. And I also get a lot of inspiration from photographers and the way they they see the world through their creative lens. Q: I had a friend who once asked, “How cool would it be if music followed you around like it did in the movies!” What songs would your life’s soundtrack include?A: We both love Swedish music, especially some singer/songwriters such as Veronica Maggio, Håkan Hellström and Lars Winnerbäck. They have the perfect mix of melancholy and happy I-will-conquer-the-world-songs ;) Q: What's next for PrettyPegs? (any news, up coming launches, partnerships, personal growth events coming up in 2017) A: Yes, we have an exciting new collaboration coming up with Mrs Mighetto. The playful bed panels will be ordered on our website and are sold as a lovely set of 3 pieces, to help keep the young ones tight and safe during the night. They are easy to attach to Ikea’s box spring mattress, using our included universal fitting plates and let the trip to imagination land begin! About Mrs Mighetto Mrs Mighetto is a swedish brand that sells prints made from original paintings in watercolour, full of fantasy, history, mystery and colours. Suitable for grown ups and kids, their beloved characters and personalities are brought to life by crafty hands that illustrate a magical, already known, Mighetto world.
