Part blankie part BFF the super plush creatures that make up the Slumberkins crew can be described in one word, irresistible. Their cozy fur bodies and friendly faces say, “pick me up and never let me go.” But there’s more to them than just their charming good looks.

As part of the co-founders desire to bring comfort to babies and little ones all over the world, they also wanted to encourage reading. Reading with a focused on helping parents broach sometimes sensitive discussions or emotional topics for little ones. Which makes them just the perfect baby gift.

We recently caught up with the co-founders Callie and Kelly on all things Slumberkins.

Cuddly creatures that teach children life lessons

Where were you and what were you doing when you decided to start and co-found Slumberkins

Callie and I were on maternity leave together from our jobs in education. Callie was working as a Special Education teacher and I was working as a School Counselor. We were walking around talking about the lack of tools for teachers and parents to teach social emotional skills in early childhood. There was nothing approachable and available to parents on the market. On a post partum walk, we decided we wanted to try to bring Slumberkins to the world.

Your collection includes some of the less popular animals creatures, how do you decide on who’s to join the crew?

We always start with the skill first. We brainstorm what creature that embodies that skill. We tend towards creatures that are more unique or obscure, but it’s all about the right fit and finding a creature that feels right.

How did pairing the cuddly creatures with a book come about?

The Sleepytime Rhymes have always been the heart of our brand. We are in the business of education. We always want our creatures to speak to parents and kids to give them tools to build social emotional life skills. We would have never left our jobs in education if our company didn’t fulfill on our mission of supporting kids and families through learning.

We all need to take notes from this book about believing yourself.

What’s your process like for selecting book topics to pair with a specific creature?

We choose the skills based on what we saw kids and families needing from our work in the schools. We taught these skills in the schools every day and knew that if parents were able to start early, they could have a bigger impact on their child’s learning.

What's your own personal home décor style? What favorite pieces do you have peppered into your home?

As much as Slumberkins has a distinct style online, our homes are much more eclectic and represent our continual struggle of the work life balance. To be honest, our houses are not perfectly styled. We are constantly trying to minimize clutter in our homes and keep up with the turn over of baby clothes, toys and bottles. The #momlife struggle is real and we, like everyone else, are fumbling our way through it!

Who are your favorite go-to home furnishing or décor brands?

We love the aesthetic of Magnolia by Joanna Gaines.

Do you have a social media style crush and/or favorite blog?

We love @themodernproper. We don’t have a ton of time to cook, but they always have amazing recipes for busy moms!

What's next for Slumberkins?

We have a lot happening with Slumberkins in the upcoming year. We are expanding our product line to include full stuffies and older children. We are addressing new skills for kids and families with new creature releases.

Our biggest news is that we have a signed a shopping agreement with the Jim Henson Company to create a Slumberkins TV show for pre-school aged kids! We could not be more excited for our creatures to come to life!
